I believe that there is plenty of money in our wonderful country, being taken in taxes to pay for all of the great things we do as a nation. I totally agree that for little or no cost the system could be used to encourage entrepreneurs with the obvious benefits that you point out. Most of which have been proven during COVID. I borrowed the CBILS money and used it to survive and grow and have since started two additional businesses, which I’m sure I would have done without that access to cheap and low hassle finance. I am dutifully paying this loan back each and every month like I do with my taxes which I am equally as proud of. My additional point would be to stop the waste of money which is in a similar vein to your points - start with the low hanging fruit - NHS wastage - having spent a lot of time in hospitals during my wife’s heart problems and subsequent heart transplant and various other complications. I can tell you my entrepreneurial and facilities professionals eye wanders around looking at the sheer amount of wasted money. I or virtually any entrepreneur could save the NHS millions in months, and that’s just from a facilities point of view. The only thing that stops this is a lack of action which would have to be brave and based on trust . I’ve spent time in schools, councils and other government facilities and there are soooo many things that could be done, which would either save money, improve the service and would easily be environmentally advantageous- which would take balls to embark upon and would be part of the plan to make our country the F1 of countries. (Pinnacle) thanks James keep up the great work. Paul

All brilliant. I've thought for a long time now tgst there needs to ne much more transparency in politics. So much so thst we should have an X factor style vote every week ( or when needed) on these policies and ideas. No need to worry about left or right party lines. Yiu'll just see the policy and thats it. No long winded election nonsense ( with empty promises). No grid lock politics. Can everyone think of a few policies tgat would go up in tge next Saturday vote. I think ( well all of james points) but the penalties and fines for Animal cruelty will be quadrupled. Not only would it make a statement but it would finally pay for the RSPCA.

I completely agree with everything you've said and proposed, James. As an entrepreneur who employs 8 people, not only have I received zero help from local and national government schemes, I've watched my company get passed over and ignored for public sector contracts well within our capability because my company is "too small". I've watched these contracts be handed to large companies like Fujitsu and 2e2 who then subsequently become the subject of national scandals, or go bust. We've been incorrectly charged for several years running by HMRC because they estimated our VAT bill, got the sign wrong (yes, we were owed money, they thought we owed them) fined us for being late paying, then they refused to cancel the interest bill they charged us on the supposed owed amount. We are still out of pocket. High street banks won't lend to us unless us directors put our own personal homes up as security, completely destroying the protection of a limited company, despite our company having a top credit rating and 12 years of trading. They don't want to take any risk whatsoever yet feel entitled to earning interest on loans despite taking no risk. The UK Government doesn't give a flying f**k about SMEs because it lacks the imagination to see how they could possibly grow into big businesses. The majority of MPs care primarily about their own jobs and secondarily about the people who donate significant sums to their parties, which tend to be large business owners. The Government isn't interested in anything beyond a term of parliament, which means at the absolute longest, plans have a 5 year horizon. That's not enough time to turn an SME into a large business and political party donor, so they just don't care. After 12 years pushing water uphill as an entrepreneur in the UK, I've concluded that the UK is run to benefit bankers and politicians and nobody else.

UK manufacturing is going to really struggle. Faces both relatively high wages and more foreign tariffs now. Due to the percent based system many items will either not qualify as being produced in the UK or the cost to prove it will hurt profit margins. Would push into the tourism, fintech and film industries instead. You want either domestic oriented companies or ones that can still sell results abroad without hassle.

The other works for a non profit, working with small scale farmers (albeit in Belgium), and she was telling me about what she thinks should be done to help them. A couple of days later I was reading the Reform UK manifesto, and pretty much everything suggested in those conversation were laid out as suggested reforms! Yet I know for an absolute fact that any suggestion of voting Reform would be met with derision and possibly a 'far right' accusation. That's politics today.... people who are perfectly capable of common sense and smart ideas completely constrained and hampered by their 'political identity'.

There is a massive thing I think that is being missed across the board. The illusion of successful domestic businesses causing a positive economical change over extended periods, in regards to the balance of international trade Yes by all rights we have to support business in all forms but I believe that we are really not conscious of how vitally important international trade has to be within how we operate as a business. I’m not a great writer so I am almost certain I can’t write this as clear as I would like it to be so I’m prepared for some misinterpretation but I will try to be clear as I can. More money flows out of the UK than we bring in. There are so many numerous different ways in which our money eventually goes abroad and not kept within our national economy Foreign investment Foreign aid Consumer international spending Outbound tourism Expats (bringing money and pensions abroad) Migrants sending money abroad Buisness expenditure for manufacturing and supply Etc. etc And it’s that last one I wish to focus on. (But first I want to mention yes we do have many ways we do bring in an international revenue however as far as my research has shown what we make is not balancing or exceeding all sources of foreign expenditure, I could be wrong but from as far as all the stats I’ve looked at it seems to be the case- even if it is not I still believe it’s not something we are consciously looking at as, as important as it should be.) If we take most UK businesses I fear that many many of them will never look at balancing their outgoing international costs against international sales. We take an engineer for example- he buys in his stock steel from china at say £100 a sheet, he makes a product which he sells for £200- Well great he’s made £100 to pay his labour tax etc, But it’s where this extra £100 has come from which is important- He may make 1000x of this product And maybe 10% he sells abroad- So he’s made £200,000 (-£100,000 of material cost) But only 10% of that is from abroad- So of the money he has made only £10,000 is money he has brought into the country from abroad, however he has spent £90,000 out of the country, out of the economy. But it goes outside the radar of importance because he’s still at the end of the day made £100,000 for himself regardless of it’s from foreign or domestic income. So why should he care that in terms of money floating around our economy we have now lost £90,000 to the foreign world in this transaction… Now do the same analogy for every single business in the UK and how many of them consciously ensure that the income they make from foreign earnings actually exceeds that of what they make from foreign purchases? I could be wrong about the whole thing but to me it seems massively underspoken and really god damn important to how our economy should be operating.

  • @xtc2v

If it was cheap to manufacture in the UK there would be no need to "incentivize" industry. All you are suggesting is robbing Peter to pay Paul with that. Governments need to cut all unnecessary spending and pass the savings just to manufacturing business (exports are essential for the country to earn its corn in the world and support the pound) and not as giveaways to buy votes

Agree with all your tax cutting views. With all your ideas of getting government involved in business or funding initiatives? NO NO NO! Can you name me a single government initiative that has improved business in this country of all the tens of thousands they create every year? They are merely programmes to siphon hundreds of millions from the tax payer to enrich their cronie mates and civil servants who are able to suckle close to the government tit while subject to massive fraud. Reduce taxes and get government OUT of business. The "few rogues" you mentioned of the bounce back loans ended up costing us £20 billion.

Good question. James was typically a conservative voter, as I have been at times. I can’t vote for them this election because of their blatant failings. It’s my opinion that they aren’t “conservative” anymore so they aren’t an option. I can’t vote for labour because their track record for economic management and warfare is even worse! That and I don’t agree most of their policies… I can’t get onboard with any party who recommend “undoing brexit” which undermines democracy in my opinion. I’m also not enamoured with this aggressive net zero target and high taxation environment - so I guess that leaves us with Reform UK. They promote lowering personal and corporate taxation and give real examples of how they will help people at all levels of income. I would guess James will vote Conservative if he still has faith in them (somehow) or Reform UK if he’s on board for a change.

The EU is falling apart with Farmer rampages that make our farmer protests look like picnics in comparison, rising crime in tourist areas that dwarfs even the UK stats and the German economy on the verge of a deep recession, far deeper than our shallow one... I went to both Belfast and Dublin recently and you'd have to be completely bonkers to want to be in the EU after visiting both of those cities!... The Eurocrats need to be arrested for what they've done to Dublin and other EU cities!... They EU is also moving towards right-wing parties being in charge so even if you wanted to, it's not going to happen in regards to a full rejoin... Even Labour don't want to go through 3 or 4 years of parliament being frozen again with legislation and in-fighting which brought the country to a standstill last time... Starmer has also said he doesn't want that... It would be a disaster for his party so is not going to happen... Unfortunately though, I know what will happen... Starmer will just get us back inline with the EU through the back-door... You'll see a slow drip-feed over the next few years of us agreeing to most of the EU rules so that nobody notices them apart from those that are actually switched on.

But just dropping the price by £1 on items, can make the profit only a 1/3 of another seller who is selling for £1 more. It was a difficult one. You have very little sales by the profit on each sale is acceptable. Or you can make 10p profit on a sale of £6 items and work like a mad dog shipping humoungous qty of stuff,. Illustrated example below. two retailers both buy a pen for £1 to sell retailer A sells it for £1.20 and has a 12x conversion 240p retailer B sells it for £1.30 and has a 8.4x conversion retailer A total GP is 240p retailer B total GP is 252p I know I use to conversions rates of the two giants you mentioned. I'm not implying that is the case with those giants. But I would like to see how those higher conversions relate to the profitability of some of the conventional supermarket which have less converisons buy higher margins. In costco people just buy just for the value. But profits are thin..

There is the government backed Development Bank of Wales that deals with the £250k/£10m sector you mentioned to encourage entrepreneurship in Wales. It’s surprisingly forward thinking for something Welsh 😄

Yes like how NATO is to blame for Putin invading Ukraine.. Farage will lie to everyone and anyone to get some power.. He's going after the brexit audience again as he knows that he has a reliable and gullible backing and that will never change.

Really? You trust the guy who is still wiping putin's semen from his upper lip? The guy who promised he would leave the UK if Brexit was a failure, then admitted that Brexit was a failure, then didn't leave the UK? Really? That guy? You trust that guy? Whatever you're smoking, it must be good stuff.

It's a shame the UK is completely failing compared to all other economies in Europe, The UK needs significant capital investment to grow the tax base, Austerity has brought the country to its knees

Austerity? Public spending and waste is out of control! I’d love to see where your position is sourced from. If you suggest greater spending you’re setting our children and grandchildren up for even higher taxation than the 60% effective tax rate I’m paying now - thanks to this outgoing “conservative” party who turned out to be anything but conservative… labour will be even worse with zero history of ever improving the economy after a conservative term… I recall the post it left in the treasury about Gordon Browns abysmal time as PM.

So much sense in this video, well done James! How can you push these ideas into the government spotlight though? The trouble is they only think in reelection terms, not generational terms. If the government were rewarded for long term success then we may stand a chance?

There's an unfortunate and likely true concept though, James, that the government and by extension the big corporates actually don't want it to be easy for small businesses to thrive. It's in their interest to have a population that has only just enough to get by and is generally needy and reliant. It's one of the most powerful forms of control and is why our taxes are the highest they've ever been. They're taking out money from us and putting up barriers to business for "our benefit" and "our safety". Bullshit. The problem is far too many people just lap it up and fall into the good cop bad cop pantomime that goes on between the main parties. We need real change, not just more of the same by a different name.
